The town of Alghero is located on the northwest coast of Sardinia on the island’s coral reef, one of the most spectacular for diving and snorkeling. The favourable winds also make it popular with surfers, windsurfers and sailors particularly off season.
The town itself is pretty with a historical centre enclosed within embattlement walls, a harbour and two lovely promenades, one is on the high part of the city going towards Bosa called Lungomare Valencia and the other is a long palm lined promenade that goes from the port to the lido area where the town beaches start in a long white sandy stretch all the way to Fertilia, a tiny hamlet on the sea very popular with holidaymakers.
The locals are very proud of their Catalan origins, influences of which can be spotted in the architecture, in the food and their dialect, which is a version of Catalan mixed with Sardinian elements.
Alghero’s old town is lively all year round and unlike other areas that come to life only in the summer, this town is lovely to visit off season as well. The climate is mild and it is easy to reach with the Ryanair flights from all over Europe. In fact in later years there has been an increasing trend of people relocating to Alghero, particularly Germans and British.
Alghero is a good base from which to explore other areas in Sardinia, there is a variety of great beaches in the immediate surroundings such as the ever popular BombardeBeach, Lazzaretto or Pineta Mugoni towards Porto Conte e Capo Caccia and La Speranza on the way to Bosa. The drive from Alghero to Bosa, is not only very enjoyable for its panoramic nature but is also an opportunity to discover the many little coves only accessible on foot. Stintino is only a 40-minute drive away and its beaches such as La Pelosa and La Pelosetta are renowned to be amongst the most beautiful in the Mediterranean.
Alghero offers a buzzy nightlife with a great variety of night bars, clubs and restaurants.
